This site is dedicated to the Baker Bandits, Marines of B-1-5 (Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment) who served during the Korean War (1950 – 1953). The site, which is a work in progress, seeks to offer a collection of photographs, stories, personnel details, and unit records for Baker Company.

Content for the website is derived from unit diaries, archival records of the U.S. Marine Corps at the National Archives, accounts from those who served, and The Guidon - a monthly newsletter that veterans of B-1-5 contributed to between 1986 and 2006. The Guidon was organized, edited, and published by Emmett Shelton, Jr. Emmett was instrumental in connecting veterans of B-1-5 through the newsletter and annual reunions until health would no longer allow. The newsletters and reunions provided a meaningful outlet for the aging veterans to share their memories, stories, and news with each other. As time passed, increasingly more of the newsletter's announcements marked the passing of yet another Baker Bandit.

After The Guidon helped my grandfather, Arthur Reid, reconnect with his Baker Bandit brothers, the most recent copies of the newsletter were ever present on his dining room table or desk. The newsletters provided him with another means with which to share his wartime experiences with his friends and family. The monthly issues (re)introduced us to the stories and men with whom my grandfather was forever bonded through the trials, tragedies, and occasional lighter moments of the war.

My grandfather's collection of newsletters and letters from the war sparked an interest in further research and the desire to share these memories with others. I am currently compiling these into a written narrative alongside the website. I hope these provide a way for others to connect with their own Baker Bandits.

The site’s navigational home button includes the logo that the Baker Bandits printed on stickers, buttons, and patches at their annual reunions. The logo likely was first drawn by Art Markey, a Baker Bandit who regularly provided cartoon drawings to The Guidon newsletters. If you knows differently, please reach out: contact@bakerbandits.com
